Safety Topics and
Maximum Availability

September+2026

You must read, and certify that you have read, the following safety topics in order to obtain shifts.

  1. Continue to practice healthy decisions, including staying home if you are sick. If you cannot make a shift, please contact us by dropping your shift and making a note that you are sick.

  2. Review and understand the lightning alert system used by Mammoth Mountain. If lightning is less than 8 miles away, all lifts and activities will shut down until there has been at least 15 minutes of inactivity. When at the Mountain, pay attention to the radio to know if closures are imminent. Know thunderstorm protocols, including the patience to wait until Mountain Operations calls to reopen lifts before commenting to guests’ plans to reopen.

  3. When out in the open during a thunderstorm, protect yourself by avoiding single trees and rock overhangs. One of the safest places to be is in a location where there are plenty of trees around that are healthy and not too tall, but much taller than you!

  4. Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher? Be sure to remember the phrase PASS – Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle and Sweep from side to side, if you ever need to use one.

  5. Mammoth Mountain has a supply of AEDs that require only 2 things to use – turn the unit on and follow the directions. Bike Patrol has units at Main Lodge and at the top of the Mountain. There are also units at the front desks of all our lodging facilities. Always call 911 and/or Patrol before starting emergency care.

  6. Apply sunscreen liberally, regardless of the sky. The sun is high and can cause burns through clouds, or smoke, if we become unlucky and start to see fire activity in our area.

  7. If there is wildfire smoke in our area, pay close attention to your reactions and do not over-exert yourself or your guests when smoke is visible.

  8. As fall approaches, be sure to be extra bear aware. Share information with guests about keeping their cars clean when leaving overnight. Secure all dumpsters and trash to keep our local bruins healthy and fit. Trash feeding creates dangerous animals and overpopulation.

  9. If you see something that seems out of place or odd, bring it up with others – “See Something, Say Something!” Inform Operations on your radio or on your phone by calling the emergency number, 760-934-0611.
